There are different types of planes available in the world.Planes can be classified in different ways, based on their uses,speed,type of engines,sizes etc.
SPEED
This is a major classification now used.This is usually based on the speed of sound Mach numbers(speed of sound is termed as one mach).Classifications are;
Subsonic - speed below the speed of sound.eg- transport planes,cargo planes and other civilian purpose planes.
High subsonic - These are planes which have speeds close to supersonic speed, but less than the supersonic speed.
eg-B-2 Spirit bomber,F-117,Some transport planes etc.
Supersonic - These are planes which have speeds greater than that of sound.Their speed varies from Mach 1 to 4 etc.
eg-Fighter planes like Sukoi,F-16,Mig-29,Mirage-2000 etc.
The fastest military aircrafts are Mig-25(Mach-3.21) (RUSSIA) and SR-71 Black Bird(Mach-3.21) (USA)
Hypersonic – These are planes which can attain speeds above Mach-5.
No hyper planes are build successfully so far but some planes are under experimental and at conceptual stages.
Eg- X-43(USA),Avatar hyper plane(India) etc.
